I know that, as an eighteen year old student, I should be completely in love with every new media tool out there, shunning print media as 'old-hat'. But I am not, and I don't think I ever will be. There is something wonderful about leafing through cookery books, whether they're old and passed down through the family, or new and shiny, being read on a book shop floor (and I wonder why I get dodgy looks from sales assistants!) It is for that reason that I wanted to start this 'book wish list' section to the blog, sharing my new favourites... and passing on not-so-subtle hints to family members... do you think they've guessed?
We have always had far too many cookbooks in our house to be considered 'practically viable' - I really knew I'd bought one too many when our precariously balanced tower of books crashed violently off the kitchen shelf and into the cat litter tray below... a reason to buy more I hear you cry, well yes, every cloud does have a silver lining! We have since turned a wall of our 'entrance' (that sounds a lot more posh than it is!) into a book wall, foregoing coat hooks for foodie inspiration - a girl's got to prioritise!
So, I think now's the time to turn to the first book of the new and shiny 'book wish list'. It's called 'Burgers and Sliders' and it comes from the fabulous Miranda Ballard of Muddy Boots burgers. Miranda and Roland Ballard started Muddy Boots Real Foods Ltd in 2008, and since then supermarket shelves have been greatly improved by the addition of their gourmet burgers. The burgers alone are a perfect way to get the BBQ season started but, if you fancy giving it a go yourself, 'Burgers and Sliders' offers brilliantly inventive but easily accessible recipe ideas to get you started. You can of course find your traditional favourites, but there are also some surprise inventions that I'm particularly excited to try: Pork and Apple sliders for a summery take on that Sunday roast; Chicken Caesar burgers for those fancying something a bit lighter; and Cheesy Root Vegetable burgers for the vegetarians among us (no more stodgy frozen veggie burgers for you!)
So forget the new bikini, this is the real summer must-buy! Give it a go and let me know what you think.
